Cardiff City Reserves v WFC Fulham Cardiff City Reserves v WFC Fulham (4th Feb 2010 05:59 PM)
Article by: Zoe Mendham

Cardiff City Ladies’ Reserves were finally back playing this weekend, hosting WFC Fulham Reserves, taking maximum points with an injury time penalty. Despite Cardiff winning the reverse fixture 5-1 earlier in the season, this was their first match of 2010, and in seven weeks, so it was going to be a tough encounter. The match was in doubt due to areas of the pitch being frozen, but after much discussion with the officials the match went ahead.

The game started evenly, with both teams playing attacking football right from kick off. However, with the rain pouring down and the pitch thawing out, both teams found it difficult to play decent football. Cardiff created half chances early on with shots from Cori Williams, Bethan Lloyd and Rachel Griffiths, but failed to test the Fulham goalkeeper.

Cardiff continued to press forward, with full backs Lisa Coe and Hannah Seward linking up superbly with wingers Fern Burrage and Rachel Cullen, who was making her first start since September after a serious knee injury. Despite this, Cardiff still could not find a breakthrough. Charlotte Preen came close to opening the dead lock with a darting run past two Fulham defenders but she shot on an angle and her effort went inches over.

Cardiff’s best chance of the half fell to centre back Chantelle Miller from a corner. Burrage sent a lovely floating cross over, and with Miller easily losing her defender, she could not connect with the ball enough to put it in the net. The score remained goalless at half time.

The second half started bright again, with both teams in search of the goal to break the dead lock. Cardiff were creating more chances, but Fulham were quick to break down the play and catch them on the break. Despite troubling centre backs Kirsty Lewis and Miller, Fulham failed to get any shots on goal to test Sophie Dando. Dando was called into action with some nice through balls played through, but she was quickly off her line to collect.

With time running out the home side pushed on, with centre back Miller virtually playing as a third centre midfielder. They were unfortunate not to take the lead in the 70th minute. A 30 yard pass played across field from Preen to Cullen which the Fulham keeper failed to collect, saw Cullen play the ball back across the goal line, but no Cardiff player was able to convert it. They were beginning to wonder whether it was going to be their day.

With just injury time to play, Cardiff made one last effort, with Burrage passing into the feet of striker Williams just inside the penalty area. She turned her defender neatly only to get tripped up. The referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty to Cardiff, much to the annoyance and protests of Fulham. In the 92nd minute, Cardiff captain Preen put the ball on the spot, aware of the immense pressure. Calmly, she slotted the ball into the top right hand corner, giving the Fulham goalkeeper no chance.

Fulham pressured Cardiff in the dying seconds, but the Welsh girls held on until the final whistle. A hard fought 1-0 win for Cardiff allowed them to keep their sights well within winning the league.

All credit to Fulham who did not give up and gave a superb performance which made for a tremendous match, but a great battling win for Cardiff kept them only three points off league leaders Brighton & Hove Albion with a game in hand.
