News Report
Cardiff U16s v Georgetown
(11th Feb 2010 01:59 PM)
Article by:
Zoe Mendham
Cardiff Under 16’s travelled to Georgetown on 24th January to play their long awaited Tesco Cup Quarter Final match. The game had been postponed for several weeks, to the frustration of both sides, but no one could do anything about the weather. Cardiff had been drawn at home but, as all pitches in Cardiff were declared unplayable, the fixture was reversed.
The Cardiff girls looked to get an early goal and tested the Georgetown keeper from range from the outset.
After such a long spell without playing, some of the efforts were a little wayward but the idea was right. Five minutes into the game Cardiff were rewarded for their endeavour when the first goal came thanks to an unstoppable drive from close range, beating the keeper at the near post.
Georgetown were determined to pressure Cardiff, and they closed down any space quickly as soon as the ball was passed. There were some strong challenges from both midfields but always fair.
Cardiff added a second from a corner that wasn’t fully cleared, and two further close range goals from good crosses meant a four nil lead at half time.
The visitors used their three substitutes at half time, and the changes paid instant dividends with all three scoring in the second half.
Both teams worked really hard throughout the game and Georgetown never gave up and kept trying to create chances.
The final score was 8-0, with goals from Jess(3), Lauren(2), Holly, Storm and Heather.
Cardiff moved into the semi finals joining Thornhill, Cambrian and Caerphilly.
