U'16s Welsh Cup Quarter Final v Mardy Tigers

Welsh Cup holders, Cardiff City Ladies Under 16’s, lost their grip on the title when they went down 2-1 to rivals Mardy Tigers in this very close fought Quarter Final match. Cardiff were the first South Wales based team to win the cup from the stronger West Walian clubs but won't be competing any further to retain their title as Mardy won the right to take part in the semi finals.
The day didn’t start well for Cardiff when three of their players arrived at the ground full of flu but declaring themselves fit to play.
This was never going to be an easy game and, true to form, it started with a fast and furious pace, with end to end football being played.
Just before half time Mardy broke the deadlock with a good goal which took the wind out of the Cardiff sails a bit. The whistle sounded shortly after, giving them time to take their breath and regroup.
The second half started with Mardy on the back foot as Cardiff came straight out of the blocks looking for the equaliser. Jenna passed to Cardiff Captain Lorraine, who slipped the ball through to Kelly. In turn she cut through the Mardy defence and put the ball into the back of the net with a well deserved leveller.
The entire Cardiff team believed that they could now go on and win this. Jess and Coryn made strong runs, Holly worked tirelessly up front and Chez, Helen, Charlotte and Lizzy all worked hard together in defence. Even the supports raised their voices in support.
As the game moved into the final stages, both sides had their chances but neither could finish. Cardiff keeper, Charlie played her part as she made two fantastic saves to keep her team in the game. At one point even the Mardy supporters applauded her when she pulled off a fine finger tip save to put the ball over the bar (a save that even senior keeper coach, Karen Jones would have been proud of).
Cardiff then made a substitution, replacing the hard working Holly with Storm.
Just when extra time was looming, and both sides appeared to be tiring, Mardy sneaked the winner when Charlie managed to parry a shot clear only for the ball to fall at the feet of Jade from Mardy who made no mistake and buried it into the back of the net, ending Cardiff’s dreams of emulating their seniors by retaining the Welsh title.
After the game Cardiff coach, Les Judd said, “Despite the disappointment of losing, this game was seen as a learning curve for us. We have a very young team with so many players coming up from our Under 14s. They are playing well above their age and the whole squad gave a very good account of themselves, including Amie who never had the chance to get on the pitch. Everyone in the squad plays their part.”
All players from both clubs conducted themselves extremely well throughout the game and to their credit the referee only awarded one free kick all game. Unheard of before! Well done to you all in this fine advert for girls’ football and good luck to Mardy in the semi final.
Cardiff are back in league action next week, away to Thornhill.
