Cardiff City LFC v Reading Ladies

Cardiff City Ladies beat 2nd placed Reading 1-0 in the FA Tesco Women’s Premier League Southern Division match on Sunday at Cardiff International Sports Stadium.
In a lack lustre first half that saw Cardiff have to reshuffle their formation in the 14th minute when striker Zoe Atkins was carried off injured and replaced by youngster Cori Williams, who looked lively throughout and was denied an immediate shot on goal by the quick thinking of Reading defender Amy Shaw with a tackle just yards off the goal line.
Cardiff just edged the first half chances with Natasha Harding and Marie Barrow threatening to break the deadlock with fine efforts but could not pierce the stout defending of the Reading back four.
Just before half time Reading had their best chance of the game, when Emma Pearmine struck a free kick from just outside the box that was well gathered by Cardiff keeper, Rhian Nokes.
Both sides started the second half with more pace and purpose and the game was a far better spectacle for the spectators. Marie Barrow came close for Cardiff with a left foot strike after a lovely cross field ball from defender Nicola Cousins.
On 55 minutes Cardiff got the goal which turned out to be the winner after Natasha Harding outpaced the Reading defence and laid off an inch perfect pass for Cori Williams to run onto. She still had a lot to do as she rounded the oncoming goalkeeper Grace Moloney to slot home from an acute angle.
Cardiff then had to make further changes up front when Harding had to leave the field with an ankle injury to be replaced by Ellie Smith.
Reading had the better of the last 10 minutes of the game as they edged forward in search of the equaliser, but could not beat Nokes in the Cardiff goal as she first saved first with her legs then denied Natasha Caswell with an athletic dive to her right, to help earn her side three valuable points, and move up the table into 5th spot.
Next Sunday Cardiff take a break from league action as they play their Welsh Cup semi final game against Llandudno Junction at Latham Park, Newtown, kick off is at 2pm.
