News Report
Cardiff City v Brighton and Hove Albion

Cardiff City Ladies had to field a patched up strike force at home to Brighton & Hove Albion Ladies in this FA Tesco Premier League Southern Division match. Natasha Harding and Lisa Bird are both out with long term ankle injuries, so Cardiff called on Wales Under 19 internationals Zoe Atkins and Danielle Broadhurst to form a strike partnership, but it was the south coast team that took all three points, winning 3-0.
The opening minutes were end to end with both teams playing at a fast and furious pace. Cardiff had a series of early corners, and were unlucky not to take the lead when an inviting corner kick from Ellie Davies was headed just wide of the mark.
Brighton’s Gemma Fraser came close but good defending by Cardiff’s Nicola Cousins forced her out wide, shooting from an acute angle into the side netting.
Cardiff’s Sophie Ingle found Terri Beddows with a free kick, but her header landed straight into the arms of the visitors’ goalkeeper, Lucy Maughan.
Brighton scored much against the run of play when a defensive mistake out on the left hand side allowed a low cross to find Jo Morris unmarked, and she had the easy task of slotting home from close range.
Cardiff struggled to get back into their rhythm with a number of errors in their passing, and were grateful to hear the half time whistle.
Cardiff came out from the break looking for an early equaliser, and after only five minutes midfielders Charlotte Miller and Ellie Davies linked up well before finding Broadhurst whose shot ricocheted off a defender and harmlessly over the bar.
With only one goal in it, Cardiff manager Michele Adams decided to make a change and replaced Marie Barrow with Cori Williams.
The home team pushed hard for the equaliser and had several chances, with the best again coming from a Davies corner kick. The Brighton defence were only able to half clear the ball which found Williams on edge of the box. She fired a shot in which Maughan was grateful to get a hand to, making the save right on the line.
In the 75th minute the Seasiders doubled their advantage when Katie Baker fired an unstoppable shot passed Rhian Nokes from the edge of the box.
In the 82nd minute, with Cardiff chasing the game, Brighton killed off any chance of them getting back into it when Kim Stenning caught them on the break to score the visitors’ third goal and securing all three points for her team.
Cardiff are home to WFC Fulham next Sunday, kick off 2.00pm.
