Cardiff City Reserves v Portsmouth Cardiff City Reserves v Portsmouth (2nd Mar 2010 10:45 AM)
Article by: Zoe Mendham

Cardiff City Ladies’ Reserves maintained their grip on top spot in the FA Tesco Premier League Reserves Division Two when they beat Portsmouth 2-0 at home last weekend. Portsmouth had not played since before Christmas, and this was the teams’ first meeting together this season. With this in mind, the Cardiff girls were not taking their top position lightly and were wary as to what to expect from the visitors.

Cardiff started brightly, playing some flowing football and great passing. They threatened the Portsmouth defence from early stages, with strikers Bethan Lloyd and Kierra Deeks applying a lot of pressure to their back four. Some brilliant link up play from full backs Hannah Seward and Lisa Coe with wingers Donna Abbot and Gemma Lewis allowed Cardiff to attack more. Despite all this pressure the Portsmouth defence held firm and Cardiff could not find a way through to goal.

The home side eventually took the lead in the 30th minute. Coe took a quick throw in to Abbot, who found herself with acres of space. She controlled the ball, crossed it in to find Deeks unmarked, who stabbed the ball passed the Portsmouth goalkeeper.

Cardiff kept this pressure on, but were quite lucky that Portsmouth did not punish them when a few mistakes were made. Portsmouth started to find their feet and apply some pressure on the home defence, but luckily they did not test Cardiff goalkeeper Sophie Dando.

Cardiff almost doubled their lead just before half time. Lloyd received the ball in her own half, ran at the Portsmouth midfield and defence, taking on four players. She struck the ball superbly only to see it deflected over the bar by a Portsmouth defender for a corner which eventually came to nothing and they went into the break 1-0 to the good.

The second half started as the first half ended, with Cardiff Reserves keeping the pressure on Portsmouth, but not able to take advantage of the possession. Portsmouth were far from giving up, playing some nice football but still unable to pull any shots off to harm Dando. Some superb tackling from centre backs Chantelle Miller and Kirsty Lewis also kept Portsmouth at bay.

Cardiff tried desperately to double their, with some half chances by strikers Deeks and Lloyd, and some long range efforts from midfielders Rachel Griffiths and Charlotte Preen.

In the 63rd minute they eventually got the all important, and rather fortunate, second goal. Gemma Lewis sent in a corner, which, with the help of the wind, sailed over everyone’s heads, and over the helpless goalkeeper and into the top corner of the net.

Cardiff coach, Deb Ball, made a few changes, with Fern Burrage replacing Rachel Griffiths. The hard working Abbot moved into centre midfield to link up with Preen and Burrage took her place out on the right. Burrage joined in the action straight away, with a skillful run which baffled the Portsmouth defenders. She pulled the ball back to Coe who’s cross was slightly too deep and the chance came to nothing.

Coe almost got her name on the score sheet near the end with a great solo run into the Portsmouth box. She cut inside and shot with her left foot only to see the ball crash onto the cross bar.

Cardiff were forced to make a late substitution when full back Seward was forced off with an injury sustained in a crunching tackle with a Portsmouth player. Kath Lovett replaced her after herself being out for a few weeks with an injury.

Ceri Hudson made a late appearance, replacing goal scorer Deeks, but there was no time to make a difference to the final score of 2-0 with Cardiff extending their lead at the top of the table.
