Cardiff U14's Win Semi-final v Georgetown
(4th Mar 2010 07:17 PM)

Cardiff City Ladies Under 14’s ran out deserved 5-2 winners, after extra time, against Georgetown U14’s in an epic cup semi final tie, held at the home of Merthyr Tydfil Town and was a credit to both teams. For the majority of normal time it seemed that profligate finishing would mean that the Blues would be out at the semi final stage, despite their dominance in general play.
The game started as competitively as it was to be throughout. Cardiff forced early corners without any clear chances.
Then the chances began to come; good play down the right between Katie and Channelle saw the final ball flash across the area. Then, after an excellent run and cross by Chloe, Channelle shot over.
Georgetown struggled to beat the offside trap but when they did for the first time Jess made an excellent saving tackle.
Cardiff had a good shout for handball turned down after another corner, and a
fine run and shot from Shannon nearly saw the ball bundled in. As ever, with so much dominance and chances going begging, the fear was that Cardiff would be punished, and sure enough the familiar script was followed.
Georgetown sprung the offside trap once and should have scored but shot wide, then just before half time a fine run from midfield left the Blues defence appealing in vain for offside as a cool finish made it 1-0.
There was time for Channelle to force a good save but Cardiff went to the break behind.
The second half continued with more of the same as Cardiff built pressure but could not score. Taylor shot just wide, and more chances were either saved or wasted. A fine run from Katie seemed that it must produce the leveller but having done the hard work she shot over. Almost immediately Channelle hit the side netting. Would Cardiff ever score?
At the other end the defence stood strong when Georgetown broke, with Jess and Aimee forcing the ball back into midfield so the almost constant pressure could be maintained.
Finally it told, as Channelle latched onto a loose ball in the area and lashed home for the equaliser.
Cardiff seemed to be in the ascendancy but they quickly found themselves behind again when Georgetown beat the off side trap and finished beautifully.
Georgetown must have believed they had the game won but Cardiff stormed back.
Katie saw her shot saved, and then a neat one-two between Erin and Channelle and an excellent finish by Erin made it 2-2.
Cardiff's resilience had to be admired particularly with Aimee and others carrying injuries, but they seemed determined not to let this one slip.
Into extra-time and with players visibly tiring on a big and heavy pitch, Cardiff attacked again.
Casey was just wide after good work, and then Katie broke through. Her first shot came back to her, and the second was saved again, but it broke to Channelle and she nodded home to give the Blues the lead for the first time in the game. The defence was immense and repelled all raids as Cardiff continued to press.
Some lovely football in midfield left Channelle room to shoot and skim the post. Katie shot wide, and then free on the right she fired in a high cross, come shot, which beat everyone and settled high in the net for 4-2.
Finally Georgetown seemed to realise the game was up but their commitment and competitiveness continued as it had throughout.
Cardiff did not sit back and charged up field for another corner. As the ball bobbled in the area Channelle managed to head home for 5-2.
The final whistle blew to signal a huge victory, and the end to an excellent game.
Cardiff progress to the final but Georgetown can be immensely proud of their display, and also their much appreciated hospitality and sportsmanship.
