Cardiff City v WFC Fulham Cardiff City v WFC Fulham (8th Mar 2010 01:43 PM)
Article by: Zoe Mendham

Cardiff City Ladies earned all three points when they beat WFC Fulham 4-0 in this FA Tesco Women’s Premier League Southern Division match played at the International Sports Stadium, Cardiff. With Cardiff having only lost one league game at home this season, and WFC Fulham having only gained six points with two wins all season, the match lived up to expectations with Cardiff showing their dominance throughout.

Within the first seventeen minutes Cardiff had scored twice. The first goal was set up by Cardiff captain, Charlotte Miller, whose purposeful run down the left side saw a pinpoint cross met perfectly by youngster Danielle Broadhurst who fired her header home passed the stand-in Fulham goalkeeper, Rebecca Kasper.

The second goal was headed home by defender Terri Beddows, who had come forward for a corner which had been sent in by Ellie Davies. She rose high above the Fulham defence to double Cardiff’s lead.

There was an extended stoppage half way through the half when a Fulham midfielder picked up an injury, but after a bit of treatment she returned to the pitch. Cardiff continued to push forward and Davies was unlucky not to get on the score sheet when Ellie Smith laid the ball into her path on the top of the area only to see her shot driven wide.

This was followed shortly after by another sweetly struck shot from Davies which was fired straight into the grateful arms of Kasper, who did well to hold it. And just before half time her third chance flew over the cross bar.

A minute before the half time whistle Cardiff were forced into a change when defender Aimee Lea picked up an injury during a rare Fulham attack. Her place was taken by Rachel Cullen.

The second half saw Cardiff make a second change when Zoe Atkins replaced Marie Barrow and it wasn’t long before she had her first sight of goal. Smith sent in a cross from the left and Atkins fired just wide from close range.

On 63 minutes Cardiff got their third goal when Davies crossed a free kick into the area and Beddows again rose to head home her second of the game.

Ten minutes later a delicate chip from defender Nicola Cousins from 20 yards out, saw the ball float over Kasper’s head and settle into the back of the net.

The home side gained another valuable three points to keep in touch with the teams at the top of the table. Their next home game is on Sunday 21st March against league leaders Barnet Ladies. Kick off is at 2.00pm.
