A Single Goal Gives Cardiff The Points

Cardiff City Ladies took all three points from league strugglers Watford Ladies when they won by a single goal in this FA Women’s National Premier League match played at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium this weekend.

It was the home side that had the first chance to open the scoring when Gwennan Harries, on loan from FA Women’s Super League club Everton Ladies, skipped passed a few players only to see her shot pass just wide of the post.

On ten minutes Nicola Cousins worked well down the right before cutting in and sending an inviting deep, low cross into the box. Harries met the ball well but her effort hit the post and rebounded safely into the arms of the Watford keeper, Lauren Davey.

Although Watford are rooted firmly to the bottom of the table they were committed to making life difficult for Cardiff. Their first chance was from a free kick but the resulting shot was fired just over the cross bar by Sarah Wiltshire.

Watford’s Megan Wynne then shot just wide of the post before Cardiff keeper, Rhian Nokes was called on to make a point blank save to ensure it remained goalless at half time.

Shortly after the restart Cardiff were awarded a free kick but keeper Davey was equal to Harries shot, which she was able to palm around the upright.

With fifteen minutes to go Cousins fired a free kick straight at Davey who was unable to gather, and Steph Williams was on hand to blast the loose ball into the back of the net from close range.

A single goal was enough for Cardiff to complete the double over Watford and continue their slow climb up the table.
